Disability Activists Refuse to Let Thieves Steal Their Livelihood

The theft of a valuable generator from a Butte food truck operated by people with disabilities has dealt a harsh blow to their efforts to gain financial independence and improve their quality of life. But the resilience and determination of this vulnerable community have shone through, as they refuse to let the criminals' actions derail their hard-earned progress.

Empowering the Disabled, One Dish at a Time

Serving Up More Than Just Food

The Silver Bow Developmental Disabilities program in Butte, Montana, has been using a food truck as part of its Dishability initiative, which empowers clients with disabilities to prepare and sell food at local events. This not only provides them with meaningful work experience and a sense of purpose, but also generates crucial funds to support the organization's mission. The food truck has been a game-changer for the clients, allowing them to become active contributors to their community and develop essential life skills. "We had just got it up and going, we were running at least one event a week and, sadly, somebody decided to take advantage of the most vulnerable population, people with disabilities," lamented Holli Bennett, the program's director.

A Devastating Blow to Their Aspirations

The theft of the ,000 generator has dealt a devastating blow to the Dishability program, temporarily shutting down their fundraising efforts. "Who wants to stand and tell people with disabilities, that want to go to work that want to come to work every day, sorry we have to cancel this event, because somebody who doesn't have a job and doesn't want to work came and vandalized and did this to our property," said Bennett, her voice thick with frustration. The loss of the generator has left the clients feeling angry and dismayed, as they rely on the food truck to earn money and gain valuable work experience. "It made me angry … a lot. I need the food truck. I help with the money," said client Heather Raymond. Another client, Mark Taylor, echoed the sentiment, stating, "We need this truck. We cook in it."

Resilience and Determination in the Face of Adversity

Despite the setback, the clients of the Dishability program have refused to let the thieves' actions derail their progress. They are determined to get the food truck back up and running, with client Todd Ryan quickly alerting the program director about the missing generator. The community has rallied behind the Dishability program, with several individuals and groups reaching out with donations and fundraising efforts to help them acquire a new generator. This outpouring of support has been a testament to the resilience and determination of the clients, who are unwilling to let their dreams be crushed by the actions of a few selfish individuals. As client Drake Dennison poignantly stated, "We can't use it without a generator, so please bring it back." And with the community's backing, the Dishability program is poised to bounce back stronger than ever, continuing their mission of empowering people with disabilities and improving their quality of life.
