Razorbacks Shine at ITF 15K Fayetteville Tournament
The Arkansas men's tennis team recently concluded their first event of the fall season, the ITF 15K Fayetteville tournament, part of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Futures series. Palovic Advances to Second Round, Smillie and Vrba Reach Quarterfinals
The Arkansas men's tennis team made a strong showing at the ITF 15K Fayetteville tournament, with all eight members of the squad competing in the event. Redshirt freshman Lukas Palovic stood out, advancing to the second round of the singles main draw. Meanwhile, sophomore Connor Smillie and freshman Jakub Vrba teamed up to reach the quarterfinals of the doubles main draw.Palovic faced off against fellow Razorback Vrba in the Round of 32, emerging victorious with a 6-2, 6-0 win. However, Palovic's run came to an end in the Round of 16, as he fell to Christopher Bulus in straight sets. Juniors Božo Barun and Benni Emesz also competed in the singles main draw, but both fell in their opening-round matches.Smillie Qualifies for Main Draw, Bellegy Advances as Lucky Loser
The remaining four Razorbacks, including Smillie, Brendan Boland, Arthur Bellegy, and Marino Jakic, began the tournament in the singles qualifying draw. Smillie managed to qualify for the main draw after two victories, but he was ultimately defeated in the Round of 32 by David Saye in a three-set battle.Bellegy, a senior, bested his opponent in the first round before falling in the next round to Jerry Roddick in three sets. However, Bellegy was able to advance to the main draw as a lucky loser, though he was ultimately eliminated in the Round of 32 by Jagger Leach in straight sets. Boland, a freshman, fell in his opening-round match to Saye, while Jakic, a sophomore, withdrew from the event before the start of his match on Monday.Smillie and Vrba Reach Quarterfinals in Doubles
The Razorbacks had a strong showing in the doubles competition as well, with three teams featured in the main draw. Smillie and Vrba teamed up and reached the quarterfinals after a straight-set win against Frusina/Kapasi in the Round of 16. However, their run came to an end in the quarterfinals, as they fell to Perez/Vance in straight sets.Barun and Boland fell 3-6, 3-6 in the first round against Perez/Vance, while Emesz and Palovic dropped their first match to Lieberman/Vasser, 3-6, 3-6.Razorbacks Set to Compete at ITA All-American Championships
The Razorbacks' successful outing at the ITF 15K Fayetteville tournament has set the stage for their next challenge, the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Four members of the team will be representing Arkansas in the prestigious event, which will take place from September 21-29.Barun is slated to start the tournament in the prequalifying singles draw, while also competing with Jakic in the prequalifying doubles draw. Emesz and Vrba will team up to join the other doubles tandem in the prequalifying draw. The Razorbacks will be looking to continue their strong performance and make a lasting impression at the ITA All-American Championships.
