The iconic presence of Elvis Presley has inspired countless artists over the decades, and Collective Soul's latest project is no exception. The band's two-CD album "Here to Eternity" was recorded at the late King of Rock and Roll's California retreat in Palm Springs. For Ed Roland, founding member of Collective Soul, this was a dream realized, as he grew up admiring Presley in Atlanta.
In the historic Big Room where Elvis spent his final holidays and recorded his last gospel songs, Collective Soul recreated a similar recording environment. Roland shared that RCA Records had soundproofed the space for Presley's live recordings, and the band followed suit. With a bit of staging and setup, they transformed the estate into their temporary studio. Roland even had the unique experience of sleeping in Elvis’s bedroom, making him the only person to claim such an honor since the King’s passing.
After starting in January 2023, Collective Soul completed twelve tracks in just four days. Encouraged by the remaining time available at the estate, Roland decided to extend the project into a double album. The resulting 20 songs showcase a diverse range, from heartfelt piano ballads to upbeat, Beatles-inspired tunes. One standout track, "Bob Dylan (Where Are You Today)," blends solo acoustic guitar with poignant harmonica melodies and thought-provoking lyrics.
The entire recording process was imbued with a sense of reverence and excitement. Roland often performed vocals in locations where Elvis once sang, particularly near the pool area. Despite some eerie moments—like the ceiling collapse in Lisa Marie’s room—the band felt a profound connection to the property's history. This experience not only fueled their creativity but also honored the enduring legacy of Elvis Presley.
